Dr Werner Knöss has been head of the licensing department 4 “Complementary and Alternative Medicines and Traditional Medicines” at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM, Germany) since 2005. He was research coordinator at BfArM from 2004 to 2012. Since March 2017 he is also head of the unit “Cannabis Agency” at BfArM.Prof Dr Knöss completed his postgraduate studies in pharmaceutical biology in 1990. In 2012 he was appointed extraordinary Professor in Pharmaceutical Biology, University of Bonn, Germany. From 2005 he was appointed Visiting Professor to the School of Pharmacy, University College of London. In 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 he was teaching postgraduate courses at the Institute of Pharmacy, University of Innsbruck, Austria.
He was chairperson of the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC, European Medicines Agency, London) from 2010 to 2016. He has been member of the Working Party on Monographs and List Entries (MLWP, EMA) since 2006. He is German delegate to the Homeopathic Medicinal Products Working Group (HMPWG, Heads of Medicines Agencies, EU).
He was member of the CEP Steering Committee (European Pharmacopeia, Strasbourg; 2010 to 2016) and member of the Scientific Coordination Board (EMA, London; 2010 to 2016). Prof Dr Knöss is chairperson of the German Homeopathic Pharmacopeia Commission since 2012. He is chairperson of the Homeopathic Manufacturing Methods Working Group (HMM) at EDQM since 2017. He is chairperson of the committee on regulatory affairs of the Society of Medicinal Plants and Natural Product Research (GA) since 2017.
